BMW R 1100 S R2S spare parts – boxer sport in the zero series
Before the BMW R 1100 S 1999 as a series model (Series code R11S) conquered the sports touring world, A small pilot series left the Berlin-Spandau plant at the end of 1998: the R2S. It was used for journalist tests and dealer training and first customer deliveries – technically identical to the later R11S, but with some differences in details that make it rare today Make a collector's item. Their lifespan, their value and most importantly, theirs Driving pleasure depends largely on high-quality BMW R 1100 S R2S spare parts off.
What makes the R2S special?
You can visually recognize a real R2S by the yellow instrument scales, the high-sheen three-spoke wheels from the first batch and the color code Mandarin 857 without decorative strips. Technically, however, the complete oil/air cooled system is already installed Boxer platform (1085 cm³, 98 HP) with Telelever/Paralever chassis in it. Differences from the series:
- ✓ M93 six-speed gearbox (later M97) – rougher switching characteristics, shorter input shaft.
- ✓ MA 2.2 Motronic – one lambda sensor per cylinder; the series uses MA 2.4 with central Regulation.
- ✓ First ABS-II layout without brake light test circuit - compatible, but only with R2S sensor carriers plug-and-play.
Spare parts groups – what R2S drivers should pay attention to
✓ Engine & oil circuit
Cylinder base/head gasket set, tappet tube O-rings, valve cover packing
– all identical to the R11S. 10,000 km interval with SAE 20W-50.
✓ Fuel system
In-tank pump (Pierburg), pre-filter and line couplings:
Ethanol makes old plastic couplings brittle –
Upgrade to metal quick disconnects recommended.
✓ M93 gearbox
Typical: 3rd-4th gear bearing play. Repair kit included
Angular contact ball bearings 6303 C3, spacers and
Turned off locking ring prevents early failure.
✓ Paralever swingarm
Needle bearing HK2020 + dust caps,
Torque support rubbers (hardness 70 Sh A)
Check/replace every 50,000 km.
✓ Telelever ball head
Play causes handlebar flutter. Ball head set including support bearing
easy to change, requires 160 Nm preload.
✓ ABS sensors
Early ABS-II sensors produce corrosion;
Replacement stainless steel encoder or an ABS delete kit
are possible solutions.
Typical weak points of the previous series
Hall sensor cable break – Heat leaves it fabric tubes become brittle; a modern double Hall sensor with Silicone cable creates permanent peace. Fuel filter in the tank – anyone who knows long downtimes, Should replace filter + hoses (NBR) to avoid pressure loss and To prevent lean running. Shift linkage rubber mount – early R2S used soft bearing sleeves; Polyamide upgrade removed the “wobble” when changing gears.
Performance upgrades – moderate but effective
✓ Chip tuning MA 2.2
Optimized maps (BBPower, RH-Racing) + sports air filter
result in up to 6 Nm more between 4,000-6,000 rpm.
✓ Lighter silencers
Zach stainless steel saves 4 kg, maintains TÜV compliance;
noticeably more agile turning.
✓ Wilbers 640 shock absorber
Tension/pressure adjustable, height adjustment ±5 mm –
Front wheel 1 cm higher for faster cornering.
✓ Steel flex cables
Constantly tight pressure point, indispensable
for ABS-II with floating pistons.
R2S vs. R11S – parts replacement
Around 90% of the spare parts are identical; Exceptions: Transmission input shaft, Motronic plug, ABS sensor rings (different bolt circle) and the instrument panel. Anyone who uses R11S parts should always Cross-check part numbers (11 digits): e.g. Clutch disc 21 21 2 325 672 (same), but release bearing 21 52 2 331 097 (changed from 2001).
Service intervals short and concise
- ✓ Oil + filter: every 10,000 km
- ✓ Valves: 10,000 km
- ✓ Transmission/cardan oil: 20,000 km
- ✓ Fuel filter: 30,000 km
- ✓ Spark plugs: 20,000 km (single), 40,000 km (dual ignition upgrade)
Parts Sources – OEM, Aftermarket, Community
BMW still has many R2S components in the parts system; Part identifiers begin with “23” (gearbox), “11” (engine), “31” (suspension). Aftermarket suppliers (TRW-Lucas, EBC, Touratech, Siebenrock). Brakes, chassis and optical carbon add-on parts. In forums like powerboxer.de or boxer-forum.de There is a lively exchange of parts.
Value & collector potential
There are estimated to exist worldwide ≤ 1 500 R2S. Originality is therefore a currency: yellow instruments, uncut rear frame, original set of three-spoke rims. Vehicles with documented OEM service parts achieve premiums of 10-20% equivalent R11S models.
Conclusion – The R2S lives through parts quality
One BMW R 1100 S R2S to drive means to preserve a piece of BMW development history – sporty, reliable, unmistakably boxer-like.
